What does the recent GM recall mean for you?

Thanks to an ignition switch defect that General Motors has known about for at least 11 years, millions of vehicles the world over have been recalled because of the potential danger they present to drivers and other motorists. But this most recent round of recalls might have some Indiana readers wondering how it might affect them and if this is the last one for GM.

GM's announcement this month recalls some 8.5 million vehicles, most of which are being recalled because of the infamous ignition-switch defect. For those who may not have heard yet, it's believed that too much weight on a key chain can cause the ignition key to slide out of the on position. This can put drivers in a dangerous driving situation that can result in a crash, as some motor vehicle accidents have already demonstrated.

As was pointed out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, ignition-switch failures in a large number of GM models can cause the vehicles engine to stop running, which can turn off power to vital safety features such as air bags and power steering. When this happens, not only is it difficult for a driver to operate the vehicle, but in the event of a crash, there is no power to deploy the air bag, which can mean serious injuries or even death for the vehicle's occupants.

Other defects that GM is aware of are electrical issues with the driver's door in some Trailblazers, Buick Rainiers, and Saabs, and possible electrical problems in more than 12,000 GMC Sierras and Chevrolet Silverados.

Though some of our readers might be happy that GM is at least trying to improve safety, you might be among those wondering if there will be any more recalls down the road. According to a statement made by GM's CEO Mary Barra last month, there could be more recalls as it performs its internal safety review. It's unknown at this time if this most recent recall marked the end to that review or not.
