Motorcycles and vehicle-to-vehicle communication

It's January here in Lawrenceburg, which means frigid temperatures and falling snow. Not exactly the most ideal conditions for motorcyclists in our state, which is why during the winter months you tend not to see this type of motor vehicle on our streets and highways.

So why then, you might be asking, are we choosing to write about motorcycles in this week's blog post. The reason is because of a technological advancement that is currently being considered for cars, trucks and commercial vehicles that could offer improved safety for motorcyclists across the nation. In the end, this technology could be welcomed more than warmer weather and favorable riding conditions down the road.

Announced last year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicle-to-vehicle communication could be the answer to significantly reducing the number of motor vehicle accidents from year to year. Once the technology is fully implemented, the hope is that this technology could prevent all accidents, making the roads a much safer place to drive.

The technology works by using sensors in vehicles that transmit important information -- such as speed and trajectory -- to surrounding vehicles. Systems within the vehicles interpret the information given to them by other vehicles and alert drivers to possible dangers. Eventually, the technology could advance to the point where vehicle make decisions about whether to reduce speed or stop the vehicle altogether.

Because of a motorcycle's design, it offers little protection in the event of an accident, oftentimes causing serious or even fatal injuries. With vehicle-to-vehicle communication though, motorcyclists have a better chance of avoiding an accident before it occurs because the vehicle's systems will alert the rider to potential dangers.

This would more than likely be a welcomed innovation in the near future in every state across the nation because it will not only help avoid costly accidents but it could help save thousands of lives every year moving forward.
