Alleged shoplifter causes death and injuries in car accident

The surviving family members of a 63-year-old Indiana grandmother are likely struggling to cope with the trauma of her recent tragic death, and her 11-year-old grandson's critical injuries. A 37-year-old woman who was a passenger in the car also has to cope with the severe injuries she suffered. The sad reality is that the death and injuries were apparently caused by a car accident that could have been avoided.

According to police reports, officers were in pursuit of a 21-year-old shoplifting suspect who was driving an SUV, but when they noticed a group of children boarding a bus, they called off the chase. Unfortunately, the fleeing man reportedly did not realize that he was no longer being chased, and he continued his high-speed escape. He allegedly disregarded a red traffic light and caused a three-car collision. He fled on foot but was soon arrested.

One of the vehicles was a pickup truck occupied by the grandmother, her grandson and a friend. The grandmother died of her injuries, her grandson was reported to be in a critical condition in the hospital and her friend was also hospitalized in a serious condition. A witness who was a passenger on a bus reported that the SUV sped past the bus on the wrong side of the road shortly before the fatal crash.

In addition to the trauma that this family is experiencing, the financial consequences of the car accident will also have to be faced. Armed with evidence of the apparent negligence of the SUV driver, they are entitled to pursue financial relief by filing a wrongful death and a personal injury claim in an Indiana civil court. This is the right of any individual who has suffered injuries, or lost a loved one in an accident that resulted from another person's negligence.
