Multiple lives lost in 1 of Indiana's latest semi-truck accidents

A multiple-vehicle accident in Indiana that shut down the lanes of I-65 has left five individuals dead. A 47-year-old mother and her two sons, ages eight and 10, were among the victims in one of Indiana's latest semi-truck accidents. A 34-year-old tanker driver was also killed, and his passenger suffered injuries. A 41-year-old in another vehicle also died in the crash; a passenger in that man's vehicle was injured.

Apparently, the crash occurred when the tanker truck driver failed to slow down when he entered a construction zone. His loaded tanker, which was carrying cooking oil, apparently weighed around 40 tons. The police say that the semi-truck showed no signs of the driver reducing speed.

As a result, the truck rammed into the back of the car that was carrying the 41-year-old and his passenger. The rig then hit the family's SUV, which spun into the middle of the road, and another tractor trailer was hit. The tanker ended up catching on fire, as did the SUV.

It is expected that accident reconstructionists will have a difficult time developing a clear picture of what caused this fatal tragedy, as the driver's log book and black box information were likely destroyed. They will be looking to determine if there are any signs of mechanical failure that could have caused the tanker driver to be unable to stop when entering the construction zone. Understandably, the investigation is ongoing.

Reportedly, the trucking company has received numerous violations over the last few years. This information is likely relevant to any claims for financial relief made against the truck driver and/or the trucking company. If negligence is established by appropriate evidence in a civil court proceeding, monetary judgments for the injuries and deaths suffered in this tragically fatal wreck may be entered, awarding financial damages consistent with similar semi-truck accidents here in Indiana.
