Life-threatening car accidents may result in lawsuits

No one here in Indiana expects to leave his or her home in the morning and be involved in an accident, especially teenagers. Unfortunately, car accidents can happen at any time and at pretty much any location. A 15-year-old Indiana teenager is recovering after he was involved in a life-threatening motor vehicle accident recently.

The accident took place on a Friday morning. A 15-year-old boy, along with his friend as a passenger, was on his way to school. His car made collided with a truck. As a result of his serious injuries, the boy was hospitalized and placed in ICU. He is listed in good condition at this time.

The accident nearly severed the boy's aorta. If the aorta had been detached, the chances of the boy's survival would have been as little as 5 percent. He also underwent heart surgery and suffered a lacerated liver. His friend was sent to the hospital for medical treatment and subsequently released. The extent of his injuries is unknown.

At this time, it is not known how the accident occurred. It is also not clear who may have been at fault. However, this is information that the authorities will gather during their standard investigation and will likely be information that the teens' parents will consider in deciding whether to sue the other driver in civil court.

Drivers have a legal responsibility to exercise reasonable care when they are behind the wheel of a vehicle. This includes obeying traffic laws in order to reduce the risk of car accidents occurring. When reasonable care is not taken and an accident results in serious injuries for another, the driver may find himself or herself liable for any injuries and related damages. With a properly litigated lawsuit, an Indiana victim may be able to recover financial remuneration to help cover the cost of surgeries, hospital stays and other monetary losses.
