Man criminally charged for distracted driving after car accident

Accidents here in Indiana can occur for any number of reasons. The cause could be the weather, a malfunction on a vehicle, a medical condition that the driver is experiencing or something else entirely. In some cases, the car accident may have been caused by distracted driving, such as texting, eating or talking on the phone while behind the wheel. If it can be proven that the driver was engaged in one of these activities, it means that the driver was negligent in his or her driving duties. It seems as though this is the case with an accident that occurred last month.

A man that allegedly caused a January car crash has now been officially charged with negligent actions related to that car accident. According to reports, the 24-year-old has been charged for using his cell phone while driving. Apparently, he was texting just prior to the car crash taking place.

The actual crash happened on January 16. The man's truck rear-ended a vehicle that was being driven by a 16-year-old Driver's Ed student. The student ended up with a concussion from the impact of the collision. The instructor, a 69-year-old man, was fatally injured. According to the student, he was beginning to slow down in the left lane of the highway in order to make a left-hand turn, and he was using his turn signal.

When a person is negligent, it may be possible to file a lawsuit to hold that person financially accountable for the damage that he or she has caused. This is true even if the individual is not charged by the police with a criminal infraction. When distracted driving leads to serious injuries in a car accident here in Indiana, the at-fault driver may be required by the court to compensate the victim for any medical expenses, property damage, lost wages and other losses.
