What are some injuries that people suffer in car accidents?

At some point in life, it is almost inevitable that every individual will be involved in a car accident at some level. Most Indiana car accidents do not result in serious injuries. However, for individuals who are involved in a car accident of a serious nature, there are several different types of life-threatening injuries that could potentially occur.

The most serious of all injuries in car accidents are related to the head. When a collision occurs at a high rate of speed, it can cause the person to be pushed forward or sideways and hit his or her head on the dashboard, window or steering wheel. This can cause a mild concussion, coma or even permanent cognitive issues. These are often known as traumatic brain injuries.

It is common for drivers and passengers to experience back problems following an accident. While many are minor, it is possible that the spinal cord sustained damage in the accident, which can lead to severe nerve damage. This can cause a reduced or loss of sensation in the hands, arms, feet and legs. Depending on the extent of the damage, it could result in the individual being paralyzed for the rest of his or her life.

A number of severe injuries that occur in serious car accidents can be linked back to the chest area. These injuries include collapsed lungs, broken ribs, internal organ damage and internal bleeding -- all of which require medical attention immediately. If individuals in Indiana have suffered any of the aforementioned injuries or any other serious injury because of someone else's negligence, it may be helpful to speak to professional legal counsel to determine whether or not there is a valid case to pursue a lawsuit against the responsible driver. With the appropriate legal advice, it may be possible to recover compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses and other damages suffered from a car accident.
