Holding drunk drivers accountable for accidents and injuries

Drunk driving can cause great harm to many innocent people. In fact, you may be dealing with injuries suffered in an accident caused by an alcohol-impaired driver. If you suffered because of a drunk driver, it is possible to hold these individuals accountable for their actions and seek financial compensation.

Drunk driving is a serious problem, both in Indiana and everywhere else. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 28 people die in an alcohol-related crash every day. That equals one fatality every 51 minutes, and the cost of the financial damages from these types of accidents amounts to approximately $44 billion.

Kind of drunk is too drunk to drive

One of the most common misconceptions about drunk driving is that just one or two drinks will cause no harm to driving ability. The way that alcohol affects a person differs on a case-by-case basis, and a person can easily cause a serious accident because of the assumption that one or two drinks didn't affect them. Just because something isn't criminal doesn't mean it is a good idea or never puts anyone in danger. Broadly, here are some effects of alcohol consumption on driving ability:

  • One or two drinks: This is enough alcohol to change a person's mood, impact visual function and alter a driver's judgment. This is particularly true if the driver is already tired.
  • Approximately three drinks: This can result in a change in a driver's behavior and can lead to loss of judgment, lessened muscle control and reduced coordination.
  • Approximately four drinks: This can make it difficult for a driver to recognize and react to danger, and judgment and self-control are significantly lessened with this amount of alcohol in a driver's system.

A driver's ability to make sound decisions decreases with every drink. No matter how drunk a driver was or his or her BAC at the time of your accident, you have the right to pursue restitution for damages suffered in a drunk driving accident.

Your right to recovery

You may feel overwhelmed by the aftermath of your drunk driving accident, and that is a normal response to an unexpected, traumatic event. If you believe that you may have a case, you would be wise to take quick action in order to preserve important evidence and begin to build a claim.

Victims of drunk drivers have the right to financial compensation, regardless of whether the responsible party only had one drink or seven. An impaired driver is always a dangerous driver, and victims do not have to suffer alone.
