A denied disability claim is not the end of the road for you

If you are unable to work due to a disabling mental or physical condition, you may know that you could have a rightful claim to disability benefits through the Social Security Administration. It is never easy to secure benefits and get the support you need, and unfortunately, many initial claims come back denied.

Denied claims may be fairly normal, but it can be useful to understand why it happens and what you should do next. Indiana applicants who are not initially successful have the right to appeal and continue to pursue benefits. In fact, estimates suggest that only one-third of disability benefits claims are successful on the first try.

Common reasons for denial

Even if you believe that your claim is viable, you would be wise to know what to do next and why many initial applicants do not get the benefits they need right away. Some of the most common reasons for denied claims include the following:

  • The applicant makes too much money to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits
  • You filed a claim for disability benefits based on a dependency on drugs or alcohol.
  • Your disability is such that it will likely not last for a period of at least one year.
  • There was a lack of sufficient documentation included in the claim.
  • It is evident that you did not follow the directions included on the application.
  • You are not currently following the directions set forth by your doctor regarding your disabling condition.
  • The Social Security Administration is not able to contact you.
  • It is possible that your disability relates to criminal activity or a criminal conviction.

Even if none of the above reasons is true or applies to your situation, you can fight back. Through reconsiderations and appeals, you may be able to eventually secure the benefits you need for your own medical needs and basic living expenses.

Do you have a valid reason to appeal?

Getting a denial is both frustrating and overwhelming. You may be unsure of what to do next, but you can start by seeking an evaluation of your case and your potential appeal.

Appealing a denied claim could be a viable option, as could a request for a reconsideration. Through knowledgeable guidance and a full understanding of your rights, you can take the steps to secure the disability benefits you need. If you have a valid medical condition and meet other requirements, you would be wise to continue to pursue needed disability benefits through the appropriate legal steps.
