The weather outside can be frightful, especially when driving

A dangerous accident can occur at any given moment for a variety of reasons, but the result is typically the same. Chances are you probably consider your health to be of the utmost importance, and you may attempt to avoid an accident at all costs by choosing to strictly adhere to Indiana state traffic laws and safe driving procedures, but others may not share your enthusiasm.

With an ever-increasing number of drunk and distracted drivers out on the road, the concern for your well-being may be at an all-time high. However, there are other dangers you may face out on the road that can be just as hazardous, such as the presence of inclement weather.

Operating a vehicle during inclement weather

While you might wish to avoid driving during less favorable weather conditions, it might not always be an option. If you do need to travel under these circumstances, understanding how to operate a vehicle in inclement weather conditions could prove exceedingly beneficial, and some advice to assist in this area could include the following:

  • During and after rain:  Roads can also become slippery shortly after the rain begins, and it is advisable to adjust your speed accordingly. In periods of heavy rain, the risk of hydroplaning may be present, and if you experience a similar issue, slowing down may allow your tires to regain traction.
  • Sleet and snow:  Sleet and snow can cause a road to become exceedingly slick in a hurry. If forced to drive in snow, you might find it beneficial to proceed with caution and attempt to travel in the tracks of other vehicles when possible.
  • Icy conditions:  Driving on ice can be dangerous, and in some cases, similar hazards, such as black ice, can be difficult to see due to blending in with the road. Although you may have the instinct to mash the brakes when sliding on ice, doing so could be detrimental.
  • Heavy fog:  Heavy patches of fog can reduce your ability to see significantly, and headlights can do more harm than good in fog. Slowing down and allowing more space between yourself and other vehicles is advisable.

Although not entirely weather related, you may also encounter other potential hazards on the road, such as the presence of heavy patches of smoke, and proceeding with caution is advisable.

When a collision occurs

While you might take the necessary safety precautions during these periods, unfortunately, you cannot make others follow the same guidelines. If the negligent actions of another driver cause you to suffer serious injuries, you might be wondering about the next steps to take to pursue restitution. You could speak with someone with extensive experience in this area for guidance. Consulting with an attorney could prove exceedingly beneficial to pursuing the full amount of compensation you deserve and help you turn your attention toward the things that are more important, such as your recovery.
