Dash cams becoming important for accident investigations

You may have seen video on the news of dash cam footage from horrific car crashes. Many find these videos fascinating to watch, and you might be one of those people. For those involved in the accident, it certainly provides a different perspective of the event.

However, more than a fascination or a new point of view, dash cams are becoming popular for a different reason, one that may save you money and help your cause if your accident leads to a lawsuit. In fact, dash cams have been so useful in some circumstances that insurance companies across the globe are taking notice.

The benefits of a dash cam

While so far, no laws in the U.S. require insurance companies to offer discounts for drivers with dash cams in their cars, some insurance companies in the United Kingdom are already offering such breaks. It may only be a matter of time before Indiana policyholders see lower premiums for installing cameras in their cars.

Even though you may have to wait for lower premiums, you may reap the immediate benefits of owning a dash cam. They are relatively inexpensive, but the higher end models offer more options. For example, instead of simply facing forward, some cameras can simultaneously record the actions of the driver. Others can record your speed and location. Many drivers who have installed this technology have found the following perks:

  • Records the footage of an accident, which is helpful in an at-fault state like Indiana
  • May speed up the process of your insurance claim
  • May exonerate you in the event police wrongly accuse you of committing a traffic violation
  • Helps your cause if you are the victim of a staged accident for purposes of insurance fraud
  • Can improve your driving by allowing you to review your behavior behind the wheel
  • Can help you monitor the driving of your teens

Even if you aren't driving, a dash cam may come in handy. Those that have motion sensors can record events that happen to your car while it is parked, for example, if another car hits yours or if someone commits and act of vandalism.

While dash cam footage may be exciting viewing when one is surfing the internet or watching the news, you never know when an accident may occur. Having a dash cam in your car may prove helpful in the event that your accident leads to a civil lawsuit.
