Risks, causes and the aftermath of motorcycle crashes as a victim

When you ride a motorcycle, you have a unique situation on the roadway. You enjoy the freedom that comes with your type of motor vehicle, but at the same time, you face dangers that other drivers of automobiles do not experience.

For example, you do not have substantial barriers in place to protect you from the road. In addition, other drivers might have trouble anticipating your presence. Unfortunately, if another Indiana motorist is careless behind the wheel, he or she can easily hit you and leave you with serious motorcycle crash injuries.

The risks that motorcyclists face

Reportedly, in the majority of accidents involving motorcycles and other automobiles, the other driver was the one who violated the right of way of the motorcyclist, thus causing the collision.

In addition, statistics show that those who choose motorcycles as their mode of transportation have a 26-times-higher likelihood of passing away in a collision, and they have a 5-times-greater chance of being injured. Although the number of automobile- and light truck-related deaths has been on the decline since 1999, the fatality rate for motorcyclists is over double what it was at that time.

Common causes of motorcycle accidents

In some cases, you may experience a motorcycle accident simply because your motorcycle results in a smaller visual target for other drivers compared to different types of motor vehicles. As a result, other automobiles or even weather and road conditions can easily obscure you from another motorist's line of sight -- especially one who is not practicing safe driving habits. This is particularly the case at street intersections, where about 70 percent of crashes involving motorcycles and cars take place.

In some cases, you may become involved in this type of accident simply because you are not as familiar with the operation of a motorcycle versus other forms of transportation. Many of these crashes are caused in part by a motorcyclist's failure to understand or appreciate a motorcycle's inherent limitations and operating characteristics. After all, riding a motorcycle requires more physical coordination and skill than operating a car does.

Your rights following a motorcycle collision leading to your injury

If another motorist's carelessness and negligence resulted in you suffering injuries from your motorcycle crash, you have the right to seek monetary compensation. A monetary award may help to address your medical bills, property damage and other losses stemming from the collision. An experienced attorney can carefully analyze the circumstances of your case, negotiate with the other party's insurance provider and then, if necessary, guide you through the process of pursing a personal injury civil claim.
